One of the greatest test of the true marrow of a dad, is the a day of shopping with his preteen daughters, or daughters in my case. Being the proud chauffeur of two wonderful daughters ages ten and twelve, I have had first hand experience in this most unique experience. Planning a shopping trip soon with the blossoms of your eye?
Have I got some tips for you!
Tip number one: Prior to initiating a shopping excursion, begin to watch television with your daughter. Take time each week, to join her in her favorite programs, make a mental note of what clothes are being worn, and ask questions. In other words, familiarize yourself with what she likes to watch.
Tip number two: When you drop her off at school, make mental notes of how the other kids are dressing. What you are doing here is desensitizing yourself to any rash judgments. You have in your mind, how girls dressed at that age, when you were that age. You must free yourself from any preconceived opinions, based on your personal experience.
Tip number three: Plan to spend considerable money. You will undoubtedly remember the prices of 1975 and be appalled when your daughter wants an pair of jeans that cost, $60.00. You may want to check with your financial adviser prior to the trip.
Tip number four: Be excited. When she begins to point out the items she likes, be excited along with her! Make sure that you don't turn into an old grouch. This is important to her, and the fact that you are going with her, makes it a very special and unique experience for her as well.
Tip number five: Compromise. There will be some things you just won't like. Be sure to offer alternative suggestions, based on Tip numbers one and two. Let her know that you are interested but still maintain a conservative approach.
Tip number six: Don't forget to take Mom. Never forget that she has experience in being a preteen girl, and her wealth of knowledge will prove invaluable to how you should react to the shopping experience.
Tip number seven: Plan to spend considerable money. This is so important that it really merits repeating.
Shopping with your preteen daughter, will be one of the most memorable and valuable experiences you will ever have. The bottom line, it is great quality time you can spend with her, and there is no price that can be put on this.
Have a great time!
