Created on: April 25, 2008   Last Updated: April 29, 2008

Gout is the most painful form of arthritis.

It is caused by high levels of uric acid. Normally the kidneys pass uric acid out of the body. A build up causes crystalline deposits top build in certain parts of the body.

One of the symptoms of gout is a searing heat, usually in the big toe. The pain is severe enough to wake the person. There might be swelling, pain, redness, heat, and stiffness in the joints.

Gout usually affects men more often than women, but women after menopause can develop gout.
Gout can also affect the knees, toes, fingers, elbows, and instep.

What can cause gout?

A long time myth is that eating rich foods causes gout. This is only a myth and has no relation to the disease.
A family member with the disease, being male, obesity, alcohol, exposure to lead in the environment, had an organ transplant, and medicines like aspirin, cyclosporine, and stress to name a few, also foods high in purines.

What are purines?

Purines are found in foods that that metabolize into uric acid in the body.
Foods such as liver, dried beans and peas, and anchovies are high in purines which can cause a build- up of uric acid in the body.
What is the treatment for gout?

Through medicines like nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS- Ibuprofen is one NSAID), corticosteroids (prednisone), and colchicines are the drugs used most often.
What can someone with gout do to stay healthy?

Take your medication as prescribed by your doctor, and let your doctor know about all medicines and vitamins you take. Make and keep follow-up appointments with your doctor.
Drink plenty of water and avoid foods high in purines. Maintain a balanced, healthy diet.
Lose weight safely with your doctor's help. Losing weight too fast can cause levels of uric acid to rise.

Exercise regularly and maintain a healthy body weight.

Is there any research being done on gout?

Yes. Scientists are testing to see which NSAID works best. They are also checking on environmental and genetic causes. Testing new medicines to lower uric acid, and reduce symptoms safely.

The role of certain foods and enzymes, and, their effect on uric acid levels in the body.
There is much that can and is being done about the causes and treatment of gout. It is also up to the individual with the disease to do their part also.

One can live a healthy life with most diseases if taken care of with the help of your doctor and by doing your part.
