Santa's Hat

Santa was ready to take off for the night
He had polished the sleigh, it was ready for flight
He had shined his black boots and washed his red coat
He had re-checked the presents and added a boat

He had shined his big buckle and fastened the sack
Cleared snow from the driveway to clear up the track
He checked on the reindeer and put out the cat
But then......... he couldn't find his red fluffy hat.

"Oh no!" Said poor Santa, (he was nearly in tears)
How could he deliver presents with icy red ears?
He checked in his pockets, checked under the seat
He checked Mrs Claus and checked under her feet

He looked in the workshop and on all of the shelves
He checked under his pillow, on each head of the elves
He looked in the fridge, he looked under the mat
But he could not find his red fluffy hat.

"I'll wear the tea cosy" Santa shouted with glee
He took it off the teapot, ho-hoed merrily
But it didn't look right no, his ears popped out
And his rosy red nose looked like a teapot spout

Santa Claus frowned "Oh this is just shocking!"
Mrs Claus offered him a red Christmas Stocking
But it didn't feel right, no it covered his face
He stumbled and fumbled and fell all over the place

"I'll have to go without it." He said to his wife
"If I don't go right now, there's bound to be strife
"Hundreds of children will be waiting for toys
"I cannot disappoint all those good girls and boys."

Mrs Claus thought hard, Santa looked so forlorn
"I've got it!" She said, "Go somewhere lovely and warm."
"If your ears are not cold, then you won't need a cap."
She pointed to Australia on their wall sized world map.

He put on his coat, then smoothed down his hair
"I'll go to Darwin." He said, "It's really hot there."
He rechecked the reindeer, the sleigh and the sack
He shined up his boots, quickly shoveled the track

"To Darwin Australia!" He said with a shout
The reindeer took off, while his hair flew about
Then before too long, there was a bump from the sled
As they landed beside an Australian shearing shed

"Well hello!" Said Santa to some surprised looking sheep
They ran away from the sleigh with a bah and a leap
Santa Claus chuckled and then walked into the shed
Where he found a shearer tucked up in his bed

The shearer snored loudly, dreaming of sheep he had shorn
He woke to the jingle bells; he gave a stretch and a yawn
"Hello there Santa." The sleepy man said
As he swiveled and stretched and got out of his bed

He rubbed at his eyes when he saw Santa, jolly and fat
"Why Santa," he said, "You're not wearing your hat."
Santa nodded,
