When are antibiotics needed?

There is a proper time and place for antibiotics. Most doctors are fairly skilled when it comes to writing out the proper prescription, then again, I know that some can be bullied into trying something to give a patient comfort. So how do you know when you really need an antibiotic?

Antibiotics are used to treat illnesses that are caused by bacteria. All illness that is caused by bacteria should not be treated with medications. Some illnesses should just be allowed to run their course.

Your body is filled with what is called resident bacteria. Even when we are healthy we have these residing in our system. It's a balance. Every time we take an antibiotic we are also fighting the resident bacteria in our bodies. As these adapt and fight the antibiotic they gain a system to fight the medication. They pass the "learning" to the other bacteria that may be causing the illness. So your body learns to resist the medication and then it no longer works as a cure.

Antibiotics do not cure, fix or help viruses. If you have a runny nose, a head cold, sore throat or a fever, you probably have a virus. Take over the counter medication if you need some strong relief. Keep yourself hydrated. Get the rest you need.

Use antibiotics for SERIOUS bacterial problems. Some examples of cases where an antibiotic is probably necessary are meningitis, blood poisoning, pneumonia, and dysentery.

The following illnesses are bacterial, but need to have serious discussion on the benefit of actually using an antibiotic; sinus infections, ear infections and urinary infections. Discuss with your doctor the pros and cons of the medication.

If your doctor prescribes an antibiotic follow the directions and take the full dosage even if you start feeling better. The most common mistake patients when they are taking a proper antibiotic is that they start feeling better and then don't finish the medication. Please don't make this mistake.

Some things that may help you decide about antibiotics are their possible side effects. Is the cure worse that simply riding out the situation? You can experience headache, rashes, diarrhea, and vomiting. You also run the risk of killing the good bacteria that regulates your stomach.

Talk opening with your doctor about all medications and educate yourself. Your grandmother's remedy may truly be the best option some times.
