I have been trying to get a freelance writing business going. It isn't easy to find paid writing assignments, or at least ones that pay decently for your work.
There are many jobs, but the people that want to pay you a paltry price for good work. Is it that they are cheap, or they have no idea what it entails to write what they are looking for? People that want writing done must realize that writing isn't easy, if it was they could write their own stuff. They come to professional writers and want to pay them peanuts for good work.
Not everyone is cut out for freelance writing. It takes dedication to be a writer, period. To put yourself out in the world as a freelance writer and take writing assignments for pay, people should be willing to pay writers a decent amount for their work.
I have also seen some short time frames for an amount of articles to be produced. These people must think we as writers can just sit down and write thousands of words in ten minutes. Not if they want good work. Mediocre writing can be done quickly, good writing takes time. I believe that freelance writers should be able to make decent money for their writing.
One person wanted numerous articles and four blogs kept up daily with a budget that would make you laugh for anything called mediocre writing, much less an experienced writer. I really wonder what people think writers are; it isn't like we can write articles or blog content in thirty seconds or less. Quality takes time, and subjects need research for the words of writers to be believable and intelligent on any subject.
This means that people who want experienced writers should be willing to pay for that experience and not in peanuts, but in something close to realistic pay. I would like to see these people try and negotiate with copywriters. The copywriters would tell them no. If more freelance writers would be more forceful in the bidding and negotiations, they would be able to get paid something closer to what they are worth, and maybe be able to make a living.
Writers are business people just like anyone else running a business. The only difference is the product for sale. The product is words for the writer.
