Spam is an internet term for unsolicited bulk email. Some companies resort to "spamming" as a source of advertisement. They can send thousands upon thousands of unsolicited emails at random email address on the internet in hopes that their emails are opened.
There also also many dangers to spam other than unwanted mail in your email box. There are other online users called "Spoofers" and "Phishers" who send emails that look legitimate, however are far from it. They often contain virus programs in the mail or refer you to a fake website that tries to withdraw your personal or confidential information such a credit card numbers, login names and passwords to your home address.
So it's bad idea to open email that you may have suspicions about. Always, always, always, trash can it if you have ANY doubts.
