Satire: Saying goodbye

While I was on the train last night I overheard two women talking about a man that they saw on the train. The one who saw this man on the train was very attracted to him, but never approached him. Everyday she would get on the train and see this man and wonder about him.

One day she was walking into the local coffee shop and happened to see him there. Unfortunately he was with his girlfriend. She was so crushed to find out that he was off limits. She hasn't seen him since that day, but never forgets that man.

How do we say goodbye? Is it easy for us to eliminate the thoughts and feelings we developed along the way. It's hard to say goodbye as the song says. We never really do say goodbye. We have the tendency to to hold on to things so dear to us. Like the woman on the train; if that man happens to be on the train again with her, would she say something this time? Probably not, but it wouldn't hurt for her to find out what would happen.

Years ago I had someone close to me who one day vanished out of my life. I never knew what happened to them. I always wondered how they were, but I had to say goodbye. If I didn't let go I would have brought myself to misery.

Years ago I would tell my fiancee that I would see her later instead of goodbye. To me it sounded like we were saying goodbye forever. It felt better than saying goodbye. I never said goodbye to her. Even when we were on the phone I didn't like saying goodbye. It was hard for me to do that. I didn't want to feel like I would never see or talk to her again.

It will never be easy for me to say goodbye to anyone. As harmless as those words sound, they have a significant meaning to me. I'm not sure if I will change the way I feel about it, but for now that's the way I feel. I understand what the woman on the train feels. It hurts sometimes, but you have to be able to move on somehow. I've learned that with every step we take we leave a piece of ourselves behind. As we move forward in life we pick up new pieces of ourselves. It's always for the better and might even make easier for us to say goodbye.
