Outfitting your family doesn’t have to cost a fortune. More and more families are becoming fiscally responsible when it comes to family spending.
Here are a few ways you can dress your kids up without breaking the bank to do so:
1. Buy off season: Prices are slashed for end of season sales. Pick adorable clearance items 1 or 2 sizes larger than what your child is currently in and pack it away for next year.
2. Clearance racks are your friend: Even when a store isn’t having an end of season event they will always have a rack or two with clothes 40% to 80% off. Take advantage! Most stores have a specific day of the week when they put out their new clearance specials. Find out what day the store(s) of your choice do this and coordinate your schedule so you can get first pick.
3. Holiday bonus: Give your extended family a list of sizes and clothing options for each child. Let them know what your child needs most; are they low on shirts, jeans, shorts? New clothes for the kids and you didn’t have to spend a dime!
4. Hand-me-downs transformed: If you have multiple children of the same gender, hand-me-downs will save you a lot of money. Toss the ones that wouldn’t even be suitable as “shop rags” (or even turn them into shop rags!). Keep the ones that are in good condition or need minimal repair. Spice them up with a little flare by adding iron on decals or gems from those do it yourself kits.
5. Thrift store treasures: Shopping at your local thrift store (or garage sale) can a fun way to save a lot of money. While looking at the available choices don’t forget about your option to make it snappier with the same ideas as mentioned in transforming hand-me-downs. Switching out bland buttons for some flashy ones, or adding accessories can make all the difference.
6. Sewing: Learn to sew if you don’t already know how. Buy patterns and materials, or Frankenstein outfits from the hand-me-down box into new and fabulous creations!
7. Coordinate: Buy pieces that go well together. Being able to create 5 of 6 different outfits with just 3 pieces will make a smaller wardrobe seem bigger. Stay away from those outfits or items that only match one other thing in the closet. Don’t forget about clearance rack accessories. A simple belt or necklace can transform an outfit into a whole new look for pennies.
Thrifty is in! Once you get started it will be hard to stop. Thinking of new ways to save money can be a fun and rewarding hobby all of its own. You’re family will look great and you’ll feel great.
