I suppose the worst thing about articles on drug abuse is this. They are normaly written by left wing do gooders who know nothing about it. At best they have had a few puffs on a spliff when they were at college, Said "It doesn't effect me", Lay down stared at the ceiling for an hour and then spewed up in the john, and then said "Never again".
I have been in the music industry most of my life. Whether you like it or not you cannot get away from drugs of one kind or another. Half the time you don't whether you are addicted or immune.
In my time I have taken most things at one time or another including: Dope, LSD, speed, cocaine, In fact every variation of all the above. I have never taken heroin, morphine or any other syringe or crack based stuff, so I will not comment on these,(I thought I would ask friends who have much experience of these to comment. But unfortunately they are all dead).
It is my view that one of the most dangerous drugs is LSD. Most drugs just wreck your body eventually, However LSD is so powerful it can alter your mind forever in 8 hours. I discovered this drug in the late sixties. I thought I had found the secret of life, nothing would have been able to convince me I had not.
Let me say this, When you do end up having a bad trip on acid, (It always gets you in the end) it is just about the worst experience you can ever have. As I said it's not physical it's mental. In my case I completely lost my sanity, I did not know who or where I was. But the most frightening thing was I thought I would never get back to sanity. Even to this day I remember the voice in my head saying: "That's it, You done it now Phil, Pushed the boat out to far man, One step over the line, And you ain't never going to get back. Just imagine thinking that, And even worse believing it!
It had a major effect on me that lasted months, Even a beer made me start slipping back, It leaves physiological scars that never heal, Needless to say I have never taken it ever since.
Other stuff like speed and coke etc. are dangerous in another way. They simply wreck your body, It's your brain that likes these. You feel that you are invincible and you can do anything. I have noticed when I have used various drugs in the studio in the past I thought I had played great. However when I listened back straight they sounded crap and had to be re recorded.
As with almost any drug they are just a way to escape, I started taking Benzedrine at the same time as my mate Kev, I kicked it after a few weeks
