Poetry: Two hearts

by E K Stapleton

Created on: April 24, 2008

Handing me an envelope
My son said, don't look inside
Keep this with you always
My curiosity, I couldn't hide

I inquired about the contents
What did the envelope hold
One day you'll come to find out
Is exactly what I was told

I complied with his wishes
Placed it in my purse, with a fold
Right beside the Kleenex
From when I had a cold

As time passed by
It got worse for the wear
It had been so long
I forgot it was there

Word came of a tragedy
I never expected to hear
My body began to shake
And my eyes filled with tears

I reached for my bag
To search for a tissue
As if magically appearing
The envelope popped into view

I grasped it in my hand
Held it very tight
Pondered whether to open it
Didn't know if it was right

I finally decided
to tear it open
Hoping his trust in me
Wouldn't be broken

The contents were now visible
I took a look inside
It wasn't what I expected
My tears were now from pride

Deep inside the envelope
An irreplaceable treasure I did find
Two red paper hearts
Clearly marked, "this one's yours and this one's mine"
