My first Karaoke experience was probably typical of most people experience, accept for one thing; I'm used to being on stage, I get up there and do my thing every weekend with my heart on my sleeve and a guitar in my hand, yet I still was just like everyone else when it came time for me to sing.
When I heard the KJ call my name over the microphone, I got this feeling in the pit of my stomach that I hadn't felt in years. I thought to myself "Why am I nervous this is just like playing live on stage?" I got up to the microphone and had to control my breathing, my hands were shaking, I heard the intro come on and I panicked! As I tried to push myself through a song I had sang a million times before it became more challenging than it had ever been. Everyone was drinking their beverages and looking at me to supply them with their evening entertainment. Finally a break in the song for the solo, what should I do? Should I dance or ad lib, or just stand there? What seemed like too sudden it was time to finish my song, and as I neared the end and the vocals and music began to fade I feared the reaction of the crowd. The song was over, there was a moment of silence. Then, suddenly as if a switch had been turned on, the whole bar erupted in applause and cheers! This was nothing, I could do this. Then rotation came around to me again, and I started that first journey all over. Shaking hands, quivering voice.
Why such a dramatically different reaction to what is basically the same thing I do every weekend? Because it's not about being the best, it's not about talent, it's about having fun and giving into the night time vibe that puts a beer in your hand and a smile on your face! No matter your age, gender, favorite style of music or any other distinguishing characteristics you may have, Karaoke is about having fun, and that is precisely what I had my first time singing Karaoke.
