I will say YES, but restricted! My opinion seems do not consider about women rights. My perspective of plural marriages based on my observations in my own country, Indonesia, and also read about the same problem in other countries. Debate about polygamy is hard to be avoided since the reasons to conduct it are very strong. The reasons of polygamy can be religion, belief, or culture. Polygamy has been practiced hundreds years ago, undoubtedly it affects showed woman as a victim.
Since the reasons behind polygamy are strong for some people, instead to debate that is right or wrong then it will be better we think how to minimize negative impacts of it. Undoubtedly, the practices of polygamy has placed women in a very weak position. Therefore, by legalizing the polygamy then we will able to protect women's rights under regulations.
I already mentioned in beginning, polygamy has to be legalised but restricted. Therefore, to conduct polygamy should be decided not only by a husband but also his wife. Although the couple has agreed to practice polygamy, they still have to consult the condition with experts. Thus, once the couple has decided to commit polygamy, they already consider whole aspects.
Restricted rules will protect the wife's rights. If the wife refuses to allow her husband to commit polygamy, then the wife has a right to ask for divorce. But, when the wife permits her husband to commit polygamy, then the husband has responsibilities to take care his wives and families equally. Here, the policies and regulations play their roles. If the husband does not able to fulfill the condition, then the wife has a right to bring him into a court.
We have to be realistic to see current situation, in several parts of the world women had been oppressed by men domination. Not all countries like Scandinavian where both men and women are treated equally. By observing this condition then I think legalize polygamy will protect women's rights. Or do we still want to read an article in newspaper that reported a wife has left her husband because his husband has another woman. Or how about a husband who has an affair with another woman but still does not want to divorce his wife? So who is going to protect women's rights?
I am not someone who supports polygamy, but I have to be realistic to see the current situation. Many unlucky women have to face with this kind of problem. So, instead of fighting about right or wrong then why don't we try to minimize the impacts? By legalizing polygamy, at least we try to protect women rights.
