Oh. My. God.
We had gotten off the plane and were hurrying away from the gate toward the tram that would take us to Terminal A when the announcement was made throughout the airport. "Will anyone waiting for the following six passengers from Vista Airlines flight 5739 from Bismarck please find the nearest official for further information. Rachael Hubbard, Claire Viantella, Michael Anderson, Josephina Banetti"
Liz, Josh, Shawn, and I stopped dead in our tracks.
"Did they say" I asked, just as I heard it again. Michael Anderson, Josephina Banetti, George Lawson
"Yeah, they did." Shawn said. His voice sounded very far away.
Joey's my sister. She's also my best friend. We stuck together through thick and thin as kids, getting through our parents' divorce. Our mother walked out on us when I was five and Joey was three and a half, but they didn't actually divorce until 4 years later, after several attempts by our mother to get custody of us. (Even though she never once made the attempt to actually see us.) But Joey and I were happy with our dad. Joey didn't even remember our mother. It was us and our dad the football coach, first at Laguna High School in San Diego, and then at the University of California.
But four and a half years ago, before we moved to Los Angeles, Joey disappeared. When she was ten she was home alone. Our Dad got home and couldn't find her anywhere. The front door of our house was wide open, her jacket was sprayed across the ground, the TV was on. I haven't slept through the night since.
Now I was running through the airport in the opposite direction looking for an employee, any employee, with Liz, Josh, and Shawn at my heels.
"My sister was on that plane!" I yelled at the first uniformed person I saw. Then something occurred to me. "What if its not her?" I asked Liz.
"We'll find out," she said calmly. She turned toward the shelled-shocked employee. "Josephina Banetti. His sister is Josephina Banetti."
"Come with me," the employee said.
He lead us through the terminal and onto the tram to get to terminal A, and then into a side office with the Vista Airlines symbol on the door.
The small office was crowded with people. Everyone was talking over one another, and I couldn't make out what anyone was saying. I stared at the Vista Airlines employee standing at the front of the room, willing him to start talking.
