Why Christians should not swear

WHY CHRISTIANS SHOULD NOT SWEAR



To find out why Christians should not curse we have to go to the bible which is, or should be the text book for Christian living. There are many scriptures that speak about the mouth and how we should use it. In Philippians 4:8 it says, Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable-if anything is excellent or praiseworthy-think about such things. How can you possibly be thinking about these things and curse.

The bible gives us many scriptures to let us know that cursing is wrong. In Proverbs 4:24 it says, Put away perversity from your mouth; keep corrupt talk far from your lips. In Ephesians it says. Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth , but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace to the hearers. As we see the purpose of our mouth is to build up members of the body of Christ. The bible tells us in more than on more than one occasion not to let corrupt, bad, rotten speech come out of our mouths. How can anyone possibly believe that it is okay for a Christian to curse.

Proverbs 21:23 it says He who guards his mouth and his tongue keeps himself from calamity. This statement makes a lot of sense when you think about it. Calamity is trouble. If you go around cursing you bring trouble to yourself. I can not think of one parent who wants their children to curse at them or even wants to hear their child cursing at all. In most cases when a parent hears a child cursing punishment results. In other words it just gets you in trouble.

In Matthew 12:34 it says, For out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks. From this we conclude that if you are cursing and saying evil things it's because that is what's in your heart. The bible tells us to be imitators of Christ. In reading the bible we find that Christ went around doing good, healing and delivering people from the things that were tormenting them. From his actions we see that Jesus had the mind of God. We as Christians are supposed to represent Christ to the world. When we read about Christ in the bible we do not hear about him cursing. In fact Christ tells us to be holy as he is holy. In another place it tells us to be imitators of Christ. Since Jesus did not curse we as Christians should not curse either.
