Gout is a disease that affects the joints. It is a very painful condition caused by an excess of uric acid. Uric acid is a waste product made by the body. The uric acid forms crystals that collect in the joints, causing the gout attack. Left untreated, it can lead to painful foot deformity and even kidney problems. If treated early, you can relieve pain and help prevent problems in the future. Gout can be treated with medications and a proper diet.

Gout often shows up first as an inflamed joint. The toes, feet, ankles usually show up the most. It can start overnight with very painful swelling and inflammation. Patients usually state they have no injury, just wake up in pain. Many end up in the emergency room to be treated because of the pain.

A simple lab test, the uric acid test will be drawn. If higher than normal, your doctor will prescribe a daily long-term control medication to reduce levels of uric acid. Others medications can help relieve pain and swelling. The trick is to take the medication long term. Once you have gout, you are blessed with it.

With effort you can help yourself prevent attacks of gout.Certain foods that contain purine can trigger a gout attack. Foods to avoid include: alcohol, anchovies, sardines, herring, red meat, processed meat, turkey, liver, kidneys, legumes, mushrooms, spinach.

The American Medical Association recommends food high in fiber, whole grains, fruits. Low protein and low fat. Drink water to help flush the uric acid out of your body. Dark berries are good for you. There is a way of thinking that Omega fatty acids may help prevent the inflammation due to gout.

The most common medication prescribed for long term care is Allopurinol. This drug reduces the production of uric acid. There are a few inportant guidelines to follow with taking this medication. Take after meals. Avoid over the counter medications that contain Vit C. Some side effects include kidney stones, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, drowsiness, rash.

Remember to drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol, avoid foods high in purine, take your medication as directed. At the first sign of joint inflamation, see your doctor. Do not wait until the pain is unbearable.
