Reflections: Marriage

by Erin Cook

Marriage is all about compromise and sacrifice sometimes. Some people think that marriage is a fairytale. Roses and happy endings and in most cases it is directly opposite. Some people get married too early and it ends in a divorce. Other people get married for reasons other than love. America is blessed where we don't have arranged marriages. In some countries the bride won't get to see the groom until after the wedding day. Marriage is a sacred commitment between two people where two souls become one but many people especially the younger generation takes relationships and marriage for granted. There are so many people who marry and get divorced and marry again and may get married as many as three or four times. Marriage is hard work especially if you wound up having children. There will be times where you disagree and that is okay. As the old saying goes: "it's okay to agree to disagree" I personally think that disagreements and fights can strengthen the marriage. There are things like finances and children that can either make or break the relationship.

For example I have been married for almost six years. We had set three different wedding dates and none of them worked out so we got married at the Justice of the Peace. We have had our tough times. Been through two miscarriages, two births, hes lost a job, I was fired from a job. If that didn't break our marriage up then I feel nothing else can tear us apart. It just made us stronger.

No marriage is perfect, no one couple is perfect, it takes getting through tough times, seeing each other through good and bad times. Sticking to the marriage no matter what conflict or obstacles that stand in the way. See each other through any flaws they may have, learn how to forgive and forget instead of holding a grudge against each other. Never going to bed mad and learn to communicate even when you are mad. Discover more about one another and working as a team to make the marriage work. If you can hold that to your heart than you can find a way to make the marriage last as long as possible.

It takes love, respect, trust, and commitment to make a marriage work and last. It is not the easy way out of trouble and not something you can toss away like an old rag. It is valuable and the memories and benefits of a marriage is something to cherish for the rest of your life. Never take the small things the other person does for granted and always to be there for each other. Marriage can be great and wonderful if you remember one thing and that is everything takes heart and hard work.
