When in the darkness your body lingers,
a ghostly form next to mine, warm but not
warming my skin, I die a little there,
in those silken sheets wrapped tightly
around my bitter bare skin.
I try to believe that our love is not lost,
breathing your scent from memory
rather than from your skin so near,
and I wipe away a tear, hiding it
in the soft folds of my pillow.
There is nothing more that I would ask
of the swirling powers that be,
than to let me love you as I long to,
I plead with them to let me feel
the waters of desire wash over my skin.
Still, I am left with your hand gently
smoothing back my hair, touching
my trembling lips, and I realize
in that moment, that you are more
than this spiteful woman deserves.
