Differences between Plasma and LCD TVs explained

Plasma TV's and LCD TV's are one of the fastest growing segments of consumer electronics today. While plasma TV's are always flat or thin screen in nature, LCD TV's can be either flat panels or in between a flat screen and a traditional CRT TV. Plasma TV's operate using plasma gas cells lined up in a grid. Each cell represents a pixel on the picture and varying currents of electricity are passed through the gas to give off the colorof the corresponding pixel in the picture. LCD screens utilize liquid crystals to block light from reaching a mirror at the rear of the screen thus displaying the image. Though the gaps are growing smaller and smaller, there are advantages with each type of screen that should be noted. Plasma's tend to have better contrast ratios thus showing darker blacks and whiter whites than LCD's. LCD's are immune to burn in of stagnant images which may be display on your screen while plasma's may burn in if you are carless with what you display. LCD's have slower response times than plasma's and thus sometimes show ghosting of images especially in fast moving video or sports broadcasts. Plasmas have a wider viewing angle than LCD's. As far as price is concerned, the smaller screen market up to 40 inches is dominated by the LCD and the larger screen market 42 inches and up is dominated by Plasma. Either screen will likely show a much better picture than a traditional CRT style television but the real large screen movie enthusiast will likely prefer the Plasma sets.
