you enjoy performances mixed with history and beautiful architecture, visit neighboring Tempe and the Gammage Auditorium on the campus of Arizona State University. Frank Lloyd Wright designed this acoustically near perfect auditorium and concert hall which opened in 1964. Locals lovingly call it the "birthday cake" for the lavish swirls that decorate the outside of the round building. Visit Gammage to see Broadway hits and top classical, pop and jazz acts, and celebrity lectures.
Phoenix is home to a variety of smaller theaters located around the valley that specialize in smaller productions and give local actors the spotlight. Popular venues among the locals are the Dodge Theater (Phoenix), Phoenix Theater, Broadway Palms Dinner Theater (Mesa), Scottsdale Desert Stages Theater, and Mesa Amphitheater. Gila River Indian Casino in Scottsdale has concerts you can pair with gambling before or after the show, but many non-gamblers go just for the show. Check the web for shows put on during your visit and know that these theaters are favorites of Phoenix area residents who look for quality productions.
If your favorite live performance is stand-up comedy, Tempe's Improv is the place for you. The Improv brings in the best comedic talent from around the country and you can count on them to deliver the laughs every time. Located near the ASU campus, there are plenty of restaurants, bars, and nightlife in the surrounding area to round out your evening.
Whatever your taste in performing arts, be it a Broadway production, local theater, or a live concert, Phoenix has a venue for it. Historic or youth oriented, you're sure to find a theater to suit your tastes. Enjoy the performance.
