Who's the bride?
The scent of turkey, sweet potatoes, and homemade rolls wafted through the air. Thanksgiving was here again, and at the Johnson's home 2020 Long-view circle, laughter filled the air. Twin girls, named McKayla and Regan sat giggling at their brother's silly magic tricks. Josh, was visiting for the holiday, and had brought his girlfriend with him.
This year, they were surrounded by family, but also friends. J.R., one of their best friends sat next to them, with his mother, Maria. Mrs. Blackstone was there, and a new neighbor, Mr. Chase had joined them. He was always alone. Their mother had insisted on inviting him. He was nice, but awfully quiet.
After the feast, all of the men shuffled off to the den to watch football on the big screen TV, after helping to clear the dishes. The ladies sat down in the living room and chatted. McKayla and Regan sat with J.R. at the dining table. It had been a normal Thanksgiving so far, but things were about to change. "What's that?" J.R. asked. McKayla peered under the table with him. A small box had fallen underneath the table and J.R. had accidentally put his foot on it. The box was black with a single gold stripe around the edges. Regan grabbed it, and opened it carefully. They could hear the crowd begin to disperse. People were leaving, the chatter was dying down.
"Well, what is it?" J.R. asked Regan eagerly.
"It's a wedding ring." Regan turned the opened box towards them, displaying a golden band, with a large diamond.
"It's beautiful. I wonder where it came from." McKayla glanced at it thoughtfully.
"You two attract mysteries." J.R. laughed.
"Hey, you are always with us, and we're not the one's that found it." Regan told him. "Obviously, you attract mysteries too."
They all sat for a moment in silence, trying to figure out who the ring might belong to. Mrs. Johnson walked in, with J.R.'s mom. "What are you three up to?"
"Nothing." J.R. answered a little too quickly. "Mom, do you know anyone that is getting married, by chance?" The two women exchanged puzzled expressions.
"Isn't Kendal's older sister getting married in a few months?" Mrs. Johnson asked her friend Maria.
"Yes, I do believe you are right."
"Thanks mom." They all got up and began to hurry towards the front door.
"Where are you three off to? It's getting late!"
"We just want to see Kendal." Regan replied. "Please, we haven't seen her all day." Kendal lived across the street, and was one of the twin's very best friends.
"Don't be gone too long."
