The answer to the question: "Is there anything that you have accomplished and that you are really proud of?" is yes and double yes. One of my brightest dreams growing up was to have at least one of my poems published so the world could read it and it has happened not once, not even twice ..... but six times thanks to poetry.com. Each poem that is published has been just as important and a happy time for me as the very first one. I have not won any money for any of them but I have won an Editor's choice award for each and every one of them and it has been the best thing to happen to me other than becoming a mother. The wonderful thing about these poems being published is that I simply do not care if I receive a big cash pay out or if I just receive a piece of paper with the words Editor's Choice Award the reward is still the same. Personal happiness and the feeling of achievement. Money can't change that feeling.
My poems are a personal statement of love to a specific individual who has touched my life in a way that is hard enough to describe as it is. So like with my poem "Lost" it was written for a baby I lost through miscarriage. "I wish you had survived, my little lost child", "God took you away" - "you loved me like I was one of your own, until the day You went home." this was written for an uncle-in-law that I was very close to. "My Mom" - "My mom is the strength that gets me through the day." was written for my mom after she had her first heart attack. This poem pretty much says it all and I didn't want to wait until she was gone to write it. "Watching you" - "I was watching you through the window, a smile of pride on my face." was written for my husband when we first started dating.
When my first poem was published I felt like I conquered the world and I felt like I could do anything. No matter what else happens in my life I will always have that first moment of happiness for my ultimate accomplishment. For me I have everything now that, that one dream has been highlighted. I have also accomplished a few of my other dreams like completing a college course and being a mom.
When I was growing up all I wanted was to be a wife and mother and a published poet with some small achievements under my belt as well. I have my poems published, I am a wife and mother, I have completed a college course and now I am writing on Helium. I could probably think of a few more things I would like to accomplish in my life but I have time to think about them and time to make them happen if that is what I really feel is necessary.
