A girl named Sara was betrothed to Jeremy, a dimwitted ranch hand out of Shady River. The day she is supposed to marry Jeremy he lights her mothers house on fire and almost kills her and her mother and her baby sister Maggie. Sara manages to save Maggie and herself but not her mother before Jeremy's plan to end all ties to her mother were completed. As she watched the house down up in flames the fire department could do nothing.. The fire chief said regretfully

"We are sorry for your loss Sara but there was nothing we could do her or him."
She sat there holding Maggie with no knowledge of the what the future may hold fore her and Maggie. After spending the night at the inn, she went to the local judge and discussed the term of her and Maggie's future.
" I was never married to him, he killed my mother on the very day we were to forcefully wed against my will." She had to say forcefully.
"Jeremy left a will for you to go his brother in Apple Ridge. As for Maggie Mrs. Carson from the General Store offered to care for her if you approved. "
Sara had to contemplate the offer, on one hand she would be taken care of while she went to Apple Ridge to inform Jeremy's brother that she would not be married to a perfect stranger. On the other hand Sara felt responsible for the predicament they were facing and wanted to care for Maggie.
" Can I have a few days to discuss this with Maggie and make my decision? " " Sure let me know no later then Friday OK."
She went home to talk with Maggie, as girl of six she should understand when things get tough you have to take what your given.
" Your going to live with Mrs. Carson at the store Maggie. I have to go to Apple Ridge to talk to a gentleman about something important."
" Will you come back for me Sara?"
" You know I will sweetheart." they hugged. Sara knew in the back of her head that she may not be back. any day soon.
After telling the judge that she will let the store owner take Maggie, she boarded the train to Apple Ridge. After arriving she went straight to the judge's office.
" I need to know how legal this paper is. Do I have to marry him?"
" Yes Ms. Sara you have to marry him, err Ryan Strong is his name. Jeremy's brother I mean. You will find him at the ranch on the end of Sparrow Rd. Have a nice day Miss."
She rented a horse for the day and went to find this Ryan. She rode up to a huge a ranch with lots of cattle and horses all over the place. She came to a young boy and asked for Ryan.
