Poetry: Two hearts

by Jayne Bonilla

Created on: April 23, 2008

late at night when the world's asleep
I lay awake and wait
to feel you move inside my womb
in wonder, I anticipate

imagining your tiny being
beneath my belly of great size
our two hearts blended in one strong beat
only you and I realize

for nine months seems like an eternity
to have to wait to hold you
I promise I will guide you
but never try to mold you

for though our two hearts are blended
and share a common beat
I vow to respect you for who you are
the moment that we meet

for our two hearts beat side by side
an experience like no other
a gift reserved for only those
who bear the name of mother

my heart beats quicky, the time has come
for you to make your debut
daddy is frantic, his heart beats wildly
we are already in love with you

"You've got a son" the doctor announces
we cry, overcome with great joy
daddy cuts your umbilical cord
and hands me our new baby boy

the three of us hold one another
life's journey has truly begun
our three hearts beat strongly together
pulsating as a family - we're one
