Bookstores and Amazon.com are being deluged with books on the Mayan Calendar predictions for the year 2012. These books (such as "The Return of Quetzalcoatl"), along with movies like, "Apocalpyto" and "2012", are contributing to the growing popular interest in the Ancient Mayan Calendar and its predictions about the not to distant future fate of the earth. Opinions concerning how the Mayan calendar should be interpreted are very diverse in their conclusions. The media and many opportunistic writers are capitalizing on the 'doomsday' prophesy of the future events that are supposedly forseen by the calendar.
Are we doomed? Is the end of Planet Earth predicted by the Mayan Long Calendar? Did the ancients of South America have information that we modern people have no knowledge of, except for what is depicted in the Mayan Calendar?
A close scientific and rational examination of the calendar reveals that it is a coded astrological based system of calendars used by the pre-Columbian Mesoamerican Mayan culture to predict seasonal events,[ periods of time and cycles of life (seasons of living].
Whether apocalyptic events will happen and bring a very drastic alteration to the fabric of humanity and the earth as we experience it today, is partially based on the fact that the calendar ends on December 21st, 2012. This date is associated with the Winter Solstice and a galactic convergence that will peak on this date.
The sun will come into alignment with the Galactic Equator of the Milky Way Galaxy on December 21, 2012. Many believe this event will cause a great catastrophe for the earth and its magnetic field and the world as we know it will cease to exist. The Earth's equator , magnetic field and core will be seriously effected by this alignment.
So will the "Dark Side" of apocalyptic prophecy consume your view of the Mayan calendar?
The Mayan culture had several different calendars, but most investigators and archaeologists focus on the "Long Count" calendar that sets the date 12-21-2012 as a critical moment for earth. This date is viewed as the start of a new age (5th earth cycle) which will mark either the beginning or the ending of the planet earth's cosmic spiritual awakening. It is interesting to note many other cultures around the world tell of the dawning of a "new age" earth cycle: the Hopi Native America have similar prediction as do the Hindu Vedic scrolls, Tibetian visions, Druid folklore and so on.
