How to help your child practice good study habits

How to prepare your child for a major test

We were once upon a time in their shoes as well. We know how some tricks' work and others don't, not because it was a bad way of studying the subject, but simply because we could not understand it when the topic was presented in that way.

As parents, we should observe what works for our child (mind you, each child learns in a different manner too!).

Some children learn most when they do a last minute cramp just before the exams. These children can perform under pressure and the results prove it! So parents should take a look at the report book before yelling at them. TALK to them, discuss how they prepared for the test and what you observed of their study habits, get them to recognise what they have done and whether it worked for them.

Others, simply have to hit the books every day when they come back from school. By the time the exams are nearer, the opposite happens, they will study less. They have to be relaxed, otherwise, they will forget all they have studied when the pressure increases. These children when pressurized to study more, will blank out' when they see the exam paper! SUGGEST to this group of children tips that can help them relax before the start of a major test.

Some children can learn more in a study group, where group discussion will play a big part in helping them to understand the topic and remember the facts. Others just need to sit by themselves and plow through the work and crunch the facts into their little grey cells.

Parents, when you tell your child to go to his room to study, some will, others will want you to be by their side not studying with them, but reading there (or doing something) so that you are within reach when they need your help for homework. They just need you there, some for security reason and some children, just simply want you hanging around them.

Whatever the reason, parents, you have to know your child and their study style AND their homework, then you can discuss the problem at the dinner table or in front of the television. This also gives you a chance to relate to them. Kids are always complaining that they cannot talk to their parents! So if you are there with them, you will be in sync with their thoughts.

Ultimately, a happy child will bear more results then one who is being constantly scolded and pressurized. A happy child is not one where all homework is being done for him, but one who is able to understand the subject and able to do the work himself. One who is capable of meeting the challenge of completing and understanding the lesson.

Happy studying!
