Pros and cons of using gifted students as classroom tutors

by Katelyn Vercoe

Created on: April 23, 2008

It is inevitable that gifted students be placed in the role of classroom tutor from time to time. Class teachers have many demands upon their time and attention and the assistance of an able student, in alleviating this pressure, is gladly welcomed. Whether or not this is an ideal situation, either for the gifted students, or those students being tutored, is open to debate. Perhaps it is not possible to give a conclusive assessment of such an arrangement, rather, advise that each situation be considered on its own merit.

ON THE POSITIVE SIDE.....

INDIVIDUAL ATTENTION

Obviously, quality tutoring from a gifted student may be extremely beneficial to a struggling peer. When the teacher is occupied elsewhere, the gifted student may give individual, concentrated instruction to students who may otherwise fall behind the expected level of understanding.

INCREASED SOCIAL CONSCIENCE AND EMPATHY FOR OTHERS

Using gifted students as classroom tutors may foster a sense of community within the classroom, as the students help others to improve their understanding and ability to complete work requirements. The gifted student will be exposed to the learning styles and habits of others and face the challenge of tailoring tutelage to best meet the needs of the tutored. Hopefully, the gifted student may develop empathy for those less able to learn and tolerance of those possessing inferior intellectual aptitude.

WORTHY OCCUPATION, COUNTERACTING BOREDOM

Whereas in many cases, the gifted child may finish set work quickly and soon become bored within the class context (often resorting to misbehaviour), the occupation of tutor to other students will minimize occasions of boredom and prevent behaviour problems. The satisfaction of helping another, and witnessing success, will enlarge the self-esteem of gifted students.

DEVELOP SOCIAL SKILLS AND DEEPEN SOCIAL BONDS

The challenge of tutoring students on a different intellectual level will enhance verbal skills and assist in the development of effective communication. The gifted students' popularity may increase as their value within the peer group is perceived to be greater, as a result of their usefulness and willingness to help others.

HOWEVER, BEWARE OF THE CONVERSE....

LIMITED PERSONAL LEARNING

If gifted students are continually required to help other students with the set work requirements, after they have completed them themselves, then their learning experiences are stifled. Gifted students require extension activities, alternative curriculum
