Who Stole the Veteran's Day Plaque?
Miss Lilly raced around the library frantically searching for the Veterans Day Plaque for tomorrows ceremony. She had left it on the desk for visitors to look at, and now regretted that decision.
"Oh mercy, what can I do?" she asked aloud. The library was closed, no one heard her cry of concern.
Mayor Ireland had asked her to make the presentation as she was the oldest citizen in town, she knew all the vets and had grown up with most of them. Such an honor that had been bestowed on her. Now the plaque was missing. She called the Sheriff.
Sheriff Garrett was well liked and kept peace in their small town. "Who was here today that might have taken it?" he asked.
"Well," she began, "I saw Gus, the homeless man, I noticed him looking at the plaque. Then there was Billy Horne, you know he is a trouble maker. Then Mrs. Snobgrass, she mentioned she thought it such nonsense that we were honoring the vets because they were all bums in her book. Miss Handy was here, I heard she was caught shoplifting, but you would know more about that than I would sheriff. There were a few others, but I didn't notice anyone else near the desk."
"All right, thank you Miss Lilly. I'll go and see these people and find out what happened." he said "Have a good evening." the sheriff added, tipping his hat as he left.
The sheriff knew it would be a busy night if he was to locate the plaque before the ceremony tomorrow. He decided to go see Mrs. Snobgrass first. It really was not beyond her to pay someone to steal the plaque just to make the council look bad. She had not been voted into the council as she had wanted, and had tried to undermine the council ever since.
Sheriff Garrett walked up to the door of the huge mansion and knocked. Why she lived there was beyond him, everyone else in town had sold their mansions as historical sites. The door creaked open.
"May I speak to Mrs. Snobgrass please?" he asked the butler.
"She is in for the evening sir." the butler told him.
"Please tell her that it's Sheriff Garrett to see her and it's important that I speak with her tonight." the sheriff responded.
"Very well sir, please wait in here." the butler said as he opened the door further for the sheriff to step in.
Minutes later Mrs. Snobgrass appeared looking irritated. "What is it sheriff?" she asked angrily.
Sheriff Garrett explained about the disappearance of the plaque and his investigation. "So, I need to ask if you know anything about the disappearance of the plaque?"
