How to keep your dog from running away

attached to the collar, just a few inches that he can feel a little bit of weight on to make him think he is still attached to a long leash. Also some dogs are very food motivated. In a fenced area, try using a whistle and calling to your dog, if he comes to you give him a treat. This will make him associate coming back to you with getting good food. Try to only give a treat every other time calling or something of that sort so he doesn't always expect it, but always say "Good (name)" and give lots of petting and attention when he comes back. Certain breeds are harder to train to come back such as many hounds including beagles and Bassett hounds. They love to smell everything and track, but love food. Using food motivation will be very helpful. By training your dog not only this way but training other basic obedience and giving lots of attention to your dog will help a lot in keeping your dog from running off.

Many dogs take off because they are bored or may need more exercise, so keep your dog entertained and walk him or play with him enough to tire him out. Having your dog fixed before sexual maturity or as soon as you can will make him far less likely to roam looking for a mate (this is true even of female dogs). A fixed, well taken care of, tired dog is a very happy dog who is unlikely to run off.
