Poetry: Bottom of the barrel

Bottom of the Barrel

Don't ask me why I'm crying
Unless you want to hear
The story of how I'm dying
From the loneliness I fear

The bottom of the barrel
Is just a state of mind
For people long neglected
From those who are not kind

The widow who has children
Who only want their claim
They bother her with their needs
It's just part of the game

The boss who takes complete charge
Of people devoted to their work
He yells and screams their worthlessness
Makes him look like a jerk

The man eating from garbage cans
And sleeping in the park
Recycling news to cover him
He's still afraid of the dark

The woman with four children
Hiding in a corner on the floor
Being yelled at and beaten
Self esteem, there is no more

What about the elderly
Assisted in those homes
Without a friend to visit them
Talking to plastic gnomes

We are a sad society
That climbs up to the top
Pushing all the broken people
To the bottom, can't we stop

At the bottom of the barrell,
Was a sight that would assail you.
