Downloadable game reviews: Zombie Shooter

Zombie Shooter is an action packed game full of shoot-em up fun. The first thing I noticed when I started the game was the intense rock music in the background. There are three modes of play; Campaign, Survive and Gun Stand.

In Campaign mode I found myself in an office building full of zombies. There were boxes in some of the rooms which were glowing. I could shoot at these boxes to release more useful supplies. The 3D scene shows the character from the top and at a strong angle. This made navigation rather tricky, but I adjusted fairly quickly. Help could be easily accessed during game play, but did not really provide a tremendous amount of game instruction.

There was one thing which was difficult to understand in the game; some dynamite which was found in a box needed to be placed in a specific area near a wall for detonation. However, how I was supposed to detonate it was not so clear. It turned out I had to move to the area marked by a dynamite icon and arrow, then move away quickly. Once I did this, I found that there were many goodies in the corridor which helped me to combat the onslaught of zombies in the next room.

There also seemed to be some zombie cyborgs which were very difficult to kill. Fortunately, they're pretty stupid, so I breezed past them to get the supplies which were in the next room.

In Survive mode, I was on a deserted highway. Soon, I was being attacked by both zombies and by rats. I had to shoot at both of them to survive. Killing them released additional ammo, health and weaponry, much of which is quite exceptional. At one point I had an automatic gun floating over my head which dispatched the zombies on my behalf without my having to do a thing. I could still shoot at them with my gun, making my game play much more effective.

Gun stand was perhaps the least interesting of the three game modes. The gun is in the middle of the screen, apparently without anyone directly controlling it. The zombies come at me from all angles. I had to turn the gun in a circle to destroy them. Every now and then a nuke appeared. Pressing the right mouse button activated them, gaining me more time to shoot at the zombies.

The options allowed me to make the zombie's blood green rather than red. This is a helpful option if you're squeamish about the sight of blood.

I found Zombie Shooter engaging and entertaining, despite the difficulties. I found myself wanting to keep playing past the limited play period. The evaluation version has a time limit, it doesn't limit the number of games you play. So you can evaluate the game as long as you like; you simply can't progress within the game until you purchase the full version. I give Zombie Shooter a 4/5; it's a highly stimulating, addictive game, and any problems are minor.
