Poetry: Don't ask

by C F Tinney

Don't ask the sun not to shine
nor the earth not to turn.
How could you ask the fire
of hell not to burn?

Would we dare, in our smallness
ask ocean waves not to fall?
Or be so conceited to
ask the birds not to call?

In our infinite wisdom, then
could we, by asking, save our lives
if the cancer comes calling
before any cure arrives?

What craziness have you then
in mind when you asked
me to stop loving her
and move on, when she passed?

Oh how I thought you, my friend
to be much wiser than I.
But I can not do this thing
yet you feign to know why?

No matter how well intended
your advice falls like bricks.
On this shattered stone heart of mine
which no words can fix.

You would have better chance
to ply the moon from the skies
Than to ever expect me to let go
of the one in whose eyes
I was perfect.
