How to make your computer faster

There are some simple and basic steps you can take to make your computer faster. Regardless of operating system, the computer can be made to speed up in a noticeable way. Here are some to think about:

First, all computers are susceptible to slowdowns when more than one program is running and competing with others for processing time. The solution here is to stop or turn off all background programs that are unnecessary. This includes viruses, spyware, and other malicious software that are not desired, so cleaning away such infections is very important.

Second, programs running in the system tray may not be so important to keep open. See if you can reduce the number of open programs there by closing them and by removing them from automatic startup menus.

Third, increasing the amount of random access memory (RAM) may quickly speed up an otherwise slow system. Try to double the current available RAM or use a higher multiple in chip upgrades.

Fourth, defragmenting the computer may help a little bit, but be sure to first erase any unwanted data, trash files, or undesired programs that take up extra space on the computer.

Fifth, try dedicating the computer to only one purpose, such as Internet access or word processing in standalone mode. Then, disconnect other unnecessary components and peripherals that will occupy some of the computer's attention. For example, a word processing computer with extra Internet functionality can appear slow if the computer is trying to access the Internet from standalone mode, so turning off this extra functionality is important to having a fast word processor.

Sixth, cleaning the computer registry has been said to speed up computer processing, but this is a job best left to experts. Microsoft offers a free online registry cleaning service which should be safe for beginners, but most operators should probably not attempt to clean the registry manually as it can disable the computer if improperly done. Only use a trusted and familiar service or program for this, if you do not know someone competent with registry cleaning.
