How children learn

Silly grandpa
Just thinking about what will tickle my grandkids funnybone and I came up with silly
word twist games. I like words and have always liked to be a wordsmith. When I was
young my favorite reading material was Mad magazine because they used a lot of word
play. I still remember one that was titled "look at the mariner with the long shaggy
hair". They had a silly looking sailor with a shaggy bunny or he had long messy hair,
well you get the idea. I love to add to my arsenal of words and love to teach a new
word or phrase to my grandkids. I bought the first Mad magazine which must have been about 50 years ago. I read it and laughed myself silly so I knew this was an unusual comic book and I better hold on to it. I then carefully threw it in with all the other comic books and asked my mother to guard this for me so I can sell it in 50 years and buy me a condo in Florida with the proceeds. Forty nine years later I asked her, where is my extremely valuable Mad Magazine Original Issue? She said she let the neighbor kids have it forty eight and a half years ago. Well best laid plans, blah, blah blah, shucks. Now on with the word twist games.

This is one I pondered last night. "First into". Short and to the point, doesn't
mean much yet but if you think about it you can come up with some interesting silly
ditties. Words are now grouped together without spaces as in web site names. Also to
make new words or goofy looking words such as "firstinto". OK we will work with that
now let's see what we can come up with.

Well hello there I would like you to meet Mr. Too, Mister Firstin Too. Who will be
first into the water? Imagine drawing a large 2 that is like a hollow line drawing
where the lines are wide apart and then write the word 'first' in it and holy cow
you have a 'first' in a drawn 2, remarkable, a firstintwo. Then you could write a
large word 'FIRST' and some old mean bully might come up to you and rip it in half,
oh no! you have a 'FIRST' that is in two pieces, yikes what luck another first in
two pieces.

Now consider your own word group or combination of words that make a new word or a word string. Time to get silly also involve the kids, throw out ideas and have a jam session, great for a rainy day.
