You may feel like you are at the mercy of telemarketers when they intrude upon your privacy with unwanted and unwelcome solicitations. However, tele-marketers are compelled by federal law to abide by a number of regulations.
First, the caller is required to provide his or her full name. They must also provide, upon request, a phone number where you can contact the business they are representing. This way, you can report them if they are breaking other regulations.
Perhaps most importantly, the company must keep a do-not-call list. If you request to have your number added to this list, they must wait 10 years before they can call you again. They are legally bound to maintain a written policy regarding their do-not-call list and provide a copy of this policy upon request.
Awareness of these regulations empowers you when dealing with tele-marketers and allows you to minimize unwanted and intrusive phone calls.
