Phoenix: A guide to performing arts theatres

When it comes to the performing arts Phoenix is a world class city. On any given day you will have a choice of dance, music and drama at one of the many venues in the area. With their own ballet, symphony, opera and local theatre groups they can compete with any city in the country. Orpheus Theatre

203 West Adams Street

After a massive 12 year renovation the 1300 seat Orpheus Theatre is again hosting acts from around the world. This 1929 gem was lovingly restored while maintaining much of it's historic beauty. At the same time it was turned into a state of the art venue.

Hergerger Theater Center

222 East Monroe

New to Phoenix in 1989 as a part of downtown revitalization, the Hergerger is home to 3 resident companies: Actors Theater, Arizona Theater Company and Center Dance Ensemble. They also host The Black Theater Troupe, Valley Youth Theater, Theater Collaborative and the Theater league.

Bring your brown bag and enjoy Lunch Time Theater. One act plays by up and coming artists. Shows offered Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at 12:10pm and lasting 30-45 minutes.

Symphony Hall
75 North Second Street

Built in 1972 this multi function hall is home to The Phoenix Symphony, Arizona Opera and Ballet Arizona. With over 2,000 seats it can support traveling dance and Broadway productions as well. Over 500,000 people attend performances here yearly, an impressive showing for a city of 5 million.

The North Valley Play House
13043 N. Cave Creek Rd.

This playhouse was founded in 2003 to fulfill the dream of a High School drama teacher to get locals involved in the production of a community theater. It has succeeded beyond anyone's dreams.

Not only do they offer local production they offer a camp for children and teens. This has led to all children productions. This playhouse has been awarded grants to perform Shakespeare in the Park several different summers.

This small group has grown and now has a permanent home. They offer classes to children, adults and seniors and in the 2006-2007 season they had ten different productions on their schedule. They have featured local song and play writers as well as local acting and singing talent.

Phoenix Theater

100 East McDowell

This is the longest running arts institution in Arizona having been founded in 1920. They began as the Phoenix Players who had their home in the Heard family carriage house. They grew from a sleepy
