But Our Flag Was Not There
Section I: The Suspects
- Mr. Tiny
- Adam Smith
- Rachel Martin
- Terrance Martin
Section II: The Body
Amongst the fireworks and picnics, something had gone amiss. Every year at the town's Fourth of July celebration, they'd raise the flag so that it stood as if amongst the fireworks as they soared to great heights to amaze the breath-taken spectators. But when one of the workers hired by the event coordinator had gone to retrieve the item, he found that someone had stolen it.
While the spectators remained dazzled by the prolonged fireworks to buy the coordinators some time, the staff involved in the flag's display had been brought into a small shack that had been housing some of the fireworks and the flag itself. When they had all grouped together, the head coordinator, Timothy Lamont, had managed to pick through the group to weed out the most likely suspects.
Mr. Tiny, the caretaker of the park. Though he did not have much involvement in the show, he was one of the few people who had a key to the shack, it being where he normally stored tools with which to clean up the park. Rachel Martin, one of the firework experts, also had access to the shack, while her son, Terrance, also had the opportunity to get her keys. Adam Smith, one of the staff members who alone was sent to fetch the flag for the event from the shack.
"This is insanity," said Rachel Martin. "I have been a member of the group working on this project every year, and I have never attempted to spoil the show!"
"Relax, Mrs. Martin," soothed Timothy Lamont. "You know I have decent reason to believe you might have been involved in the theft, so please be understanding."
"What about my son?" She yelled. "Do you really think he would have done this?"
"He had access to your keys, which allowed entrance into the shack; he could have managed to get them from you."
"Nonsense! He was with me the entire time while we I coordinated the fireworks set-up; he even helped to set some of them up." She explained.
"That's right," Terrance agreed. "I was with her the whole time, helping to set up fireworks, like she said."
"I saw him with her the whole time, too," said Adam Smith.
"But you were the one who went to get the flag, Adam. How do we know you didn't snatch it and come back saying it had been stolen?" Brought up Rachel.
At this, he glared at Rachel, feeling betrayed after he had just attempted to clear her son's name. "It was gone when I got there, Mrs. Martin. I also found this when I got there,"
