There have been many games made where you are desperately trying to fend off hordes of zombies as mankind's last hope and most of these games aren't worth the hours you put into them. Sigma (sigma-team.net) has found a way around the staleness of the zombie genre with their new game Zombie Shooter.
The story is a simple and familiar, you are a single man sent to find out why the dead have risen with a taste for human flesh. Set free with your trusty guns and cheat codes you are humanity's last hope.
The game plays like an homage to the best third person shooters (think Diablo meets Hunter meets Postal) and pulls out all the stops to meet the demand this infers. The view is third person, seen from above, and the controls are easy - after a little getting used to. The graphics are amazing considering the view is placed far enough to oversee the room you are in and those connected. Bodies stay dead, blood that has been spilled in realistic patterns covers the floors in short order. A soundtrack that intensifies as your character gets surrounded adds to the game play quite nicely.
The download comes as a free trial, a taste of the carnage that is to come. While most free downloads give you an hour of play Zombie Shooter gives you fifteen minutes or so, just enough to leave you wanting more. A drawback, yes, but a strategy that works.
A notable addition of the free trial is the optional toolbars Sigma wants to install with the demo. Simple enough, click the boxes and say no thanks - just don't overlook this step.
There are three playable versions of Zombie shooter, including the newest additions - Survive and Gun Stand - where you simply take on wave after wave of the undead attackers. The download page even gives cheats for those that are looking for maximum carnage with lower difficulty. Usually this takes away from the appeal of a game but Sigma has worked the cheats in so that you are constantly tempted to use them.
The full version of Zombie Shooter will run you twenty dollars translated on their site for foreign currency and opens new options (don't like red blood? Turn it green!), longer play time and a new character. All in all it is worth the price of the download. For such a small file (50 MB) Zombie Shooter has incorporated a lot into the game. This is definitely a must try game but don't be surprised if you find yourself wanting more.
Zombie shooter has scored a perfect 5/5 for the overall appeal of the game.
