Presidential Elections 2008

US elections 2008: Whose win would be more historically important: Obama or Clinton?

Results so far:

Obama
62% 207 votes Total: 333 votes
Clinton
38% 126 votes

What I'm interpreting the question to mean, is which would be more historically notable, the election of the first white woman, or the election of the first person with some of their heritage being Afro-American to the office of the presidency of the United States? It would seem to me that the election of Mr. Obama to what is arguably the most powerful position in the world would be a much stronger sign of historic proportions in terms of the progress that has been made in this country. Who would have thought that this was something that would ever have the slightest possibility of coming to pass, even as recently as ten years ago?

Perhaps what is most notable is that Mr. Obama embodies a personality that transcends his heritage, making it easier for most to see him not as a man of color, but rather as a strong candidate worthy of the office. He has intelligence and education, which enables him to articulate clearly to those who listen to him speak that he feels that this country, even with all of it's great accomplishments, has the potential to lead the world to an even better place for all. He has a way of making us realize that there is much more to the United States than just being the country with greatest military machine in history. He makes us think that there is a possibility that our nation is capable of even grander accomplishments. I see Mr. Obama as challenging us to rise to a higher plateau than anyone has dared to imagine before, a country where great ideologies may be brought to fruition, and to where world peace might finally be realized.

The idea of leaving petty politics behind us, and looking to better the future for coming generations is a noble notion, and one which is worthy of pursuing, and it would appear that Mr. Obama may be the person to take us there. Wouldn't it be something if it were possible for this nation's free society to take hold in country's such as Iran and North Korea, not through military means, but by offering hope and prosperity to the masses? Call me an optimist, but I believe that this is possible, and that it could happen in our lifetimes.

My belief is that we are on the brink of an historic event, one which we should embrace, regardless of whether or not the road ahead of us may be a rough one in the short term. Let us look to the future with positive anticipation, and with the understanding that one day there could be a true world peace, and that our country could be the one to lead us there. I believe that there is a real chance of this happening, and it would be quite an accomplishment if we were to start by showing the world just how far our society has come with the historic event of electing Barack Obama to the office of the presidency.
