Why so many marriages end in divorce

Reasons for high divorce statistics:

SOCIETY'S CHANGING ATTITUDES

Society's attitudes towards divorced people have become much more accepting than in previous generations. In previous generations when divorce was much less common, couples worried about image and how this might affect their social standing.

LONGER LIFE SPANS

Some say that marriages in past generations lasted until death did them part because their life spans were shorter. Today marriages often last as long as one's gym membership. You know the kind I mean. You buy a life membership and later find they didn't mean your life, but their business life.

MARRYING FOR THE WRONG REASONS

Maybe people are just getting married for the wrong reasons. Some bad reasons would be:
to lower your monthly rent payment by being able to split it, to have a baby before your biological time clock buzzes off, because all your friends are gettting married and you don't want to be out of the loop, because you wanted to experience that fairy-princess wedding with the fabulous open-bar catered reception and the honeymoon to Hawaii.
WOMEN'S LIB AND THE CHANGING ROLES OF WOMEN

Women's lib has definitely played a role. First, more women than in previous generations can bear the financial challenges of a divorce because they have more skills and experience in the work place. Second, with more women in the work force, there is bound to be sexual tension and opportunity for philandering with co-workers.

PSYCHOLOGISTS' THEORIES

Psychologists give people the excuses and rationales to get divorced when they tell us that we should put our own needs first, that we have the right to self fulfillment even at the expense of others. They say that the children will adjust and that it is better for children to be shlepped between two different households than to live in a home where there is constant arguing and bickering.

ECONOMIC PRESSURES AND THE LOSS OF ROMANCE

Economic pressures today are intense. Today it is difficult to buy a home with even both the husband and wife working. Money troubles can cause many conflicts for which there is no real resolution. The answer would be to have more money coming in to pay the bills. But incomes are staying the same or decreasing as inflation is making the problem worse.

Between the stresses of work and the stresses of maintaining the home, there is little time for real communication between couples. Romance is gone from the relationship. But Hollywood projects this ideal that romance is everything.
