Our consumerist culture rewards acquisition, but impulse buys rarely bring happiness. Usually people shop mindlessly, falling for clever marketing designed to appeal to their momentary whims. I once spent $50 on cashmere socks, because the comfort and luxury they represented appealed to me. I only wore them once before they got holes in them. So much for luxury. The idea is often better than the reality.
Purchases rarely live up to their promise. Yet people reflexively give in to their "needs." I used to buy myself a cup of coffee or a soda whenever I went to the store. Then I realized I was simply wasting my money on a bad habit. Advertising is everywhere, encouraging people to just give in. Stop allowing yourself to be baited by the ever present lure of commercialism. Rejecting a materialistic attitude is the first step towards financial freedom.
Often advice on frugality focuses on things you have to give up: lattes, manicured nails, new clothes, etc. If you are focused on lack, an attempt to live like a "cheapskate" will backfire, resulting in internal resistance. You'll rebel with splurges, buying things you think you "deserve" or can't live without. Instead, focus on the rewards a frugal lifestyle brings. Below are some of the best reasons to begin living more frugally.
Saving money affords opportunities.
Would you rather take a dream vacation, or eat fast food for lunch every day? Save money on unimportant things so you can spend it on your priorities. Putting aside just $25 a week (the equivalent of 5 fast food meals) will net $1300 a year. This money can go towards new experiences and exciting once-in-a-lifetime events. Remember it's not about doing without, it's having more of what you want the most.
Saving money brings peace of mind.
An emergency fund provides security. With money in the bank, your options increase. An unexpected car repair or medical bill can be handled without financial hardship. Emergencies are painful enough without added money worries. Bad luck is worse when it's compounded by bad planning. Saving money now will reduce anxiety later.
Saving money keeps you out of debt.
Our country's debt cycle is deplorable. People trade the titles to their cars for a loan with 200 % percent interest. Others are indebted to credit cards with 20% interest, and the rates keep rising. Save money so you can pay your bills without resorting to credit. Staying free of consumer debt is the wisest financial decision you can make. The more you owe others, the less freedom you have.
With clear reasons to improve your finances, it's easy to adopt a frugal lifestyle. Stay focused on your personal goals and begin a more peaceful and prosperous existence.
