He winks at me as if he knows
Just what I mean, but otherwise shows
No outward sign of what was said;
He just lies sleepily on my bed.

He stares up with those golden eyes
As if to say, why must you speak?
Why can't you just let me sleep?
His tail he curls around himself
As I move on, to something else
He winks again, as if to say
"Momma, I'm listening, anyway.
And maybe I can't speak in words
But I still know, yes, I still heard."

To take advice given by a cat.

When he listens like he really cares.
Maybe he knows more than I think,
And that's when he gives me a wink.

When we went out to dinner
I knew you were
