HIDE-AND-SEEK
We were standing in front of a haunted house, flashlights in our hands. The house looked like it was going to fall to pieces at any minute.
I sighed. I wanted to sleep, but no, Artemis had to drag me out to the Mystery's Club Special Halloween Event.
"Why so down?" Artemis smiled at me.
"You know I hate gatherings like this, " I growled.
"Come on, Lucy, you never hang out with us," said Lisa, who was locking her car up.
"I do!"
"Not outside meetings," Fang piped up. "You didn't even come to my birthday party!"
"I was following a murder case..."
"So murders are more important than us?" Matthew grinned.
I changed the subject. "Who are we waiting for anyway?"
"Evangeline. She wanted to visit her brother's grave"
Evangeline's brother had died in an accident last Halloween. It was a hit-and-run case, and the culprit had never been arrested.
Then we heard the sounds of a motorbike coming around the bend, and Evangeline appeared.
"Sorry for the wait..."
"It's okay!" Artemis grinned. "Now that we're all here, let's start the Mystery Club's Special Halloween Event, Hide-and-Seek! As you already know, one lucky person will be chosen to go into this haunted house! Twenty minutes later, the rest of us will split up to try and find the person! The first to find him will win! If no one can find him after one hour, the person gets the prize!"
I made a face as the others squealed in excitement.
"Now, Evangeline, who kindly volunteered, will do the random selecting!"
Evangeline took a pouch out of her bag.
"There are five green marbles and a red one. Whoever gets the red marble will be the one to go, " she said, and walked over to Lisa, who reached into the pouch... and promptly pulled out a red marble. Everyone laughed as Lisa pouted and entered the house. Her footsteps got softer and softer until they disappeared.
We found a tree some distance from the front door and sat down. Evangeline got out drinks.
"Coke! My favorite!" Matthew exclaimed.
"I know, that's why I brought a lot of it," Evangeline smiled. "There's more in the bag."
Minutes passed as we sat there drinking. Then Evangeline got up.
"I want to stretch my legs. There's a stream very near, by the way," she added. "It must look real pretty under the moonlight."
"Ooh really?" Fang jumped up and went to look for the stream. Time passed. Then Matthew, having drunk too much Coke, had to find a place to pee.
"Hurry up!" Artemis called after him. "We'll be going after Lisa soon!"
