Homosexuality is a very prominent aspect of today's society. Now more than ever we have homosexuality everywhere in all of our lives. Generally homosexuals are accepted and in most cases respected and treated as equals among us all. Gay people are now recognised as being just as human as the rest of us. Famous homosexuals like Elton John and Molly Meldrome are subtly telling the gay community that it is always possible to live the life that they want to even if there seems to be restraints at first.
Today it is much more acceptable to live a gay' life, to whatever level you'd prefer. This is a radical change from biblical times and thereafter where homosexuals were killed or at least completely rejected from society. This continued right up until the 20th century when people were still discriminated against for committing homosexual acts. This discrimination wasn't necessary and was probably only used because the straight people were scared of things happening to them so they decided not to converse with the gays. Thus no education on the matter ever took place. Another possibility about the reason for the discrimination/killing of gay people could be that hundreds of years ago the population of the earth was very low in comparison to now and what with all the wars and crusades going on at the time, population was vital if a country wanted to be a more prominent power. The homosexuals were probably seen as rejecting the meaning of their existence (assuming that the meaning of life is to produce more life, which it would have been at the time) and being homosexual would have been seen as selfish therefore, punishable by death as so many things were then.
Today it should be very much acceptable to be gay and proud of it without being discriminated against. Much of modern popular culture is influenced by the gay community. Everyone should be free to live their own lives in the way that they want to and if someone doesn't accept that then that person doesn't have to get involved with them.
Whether or not a person can change from being a homosexual to a heterosexual is an enormous debate and has been for years so just for now it would almost be fair to say that this differs between different people. For many not wanting to be homosexual drives them to take measures to change. For others this process seems or is impossible and many end up going as far as killing themselves due to the hurt that is created.
The point is that we shouldn't believe that homosexuality is a choice made by the individual and therefore we shouldn't expect them to change to meld in with the rest of us. They should be accepted and respected by everyone just the same way that other cultures and religions are accepted. There shouldn't be a reason to think differently. You can't change your race and you religion is a choice that you make and both are respected and accepted by most of society. With homosexuality, whether it is a choice or not, it should be accepted in the same way.
