Advantages of early diagnosis of children with disabilities

The advantage of having early diagnosis of the child's disability is to be able to keep in pace with the developmental needs of the child. The earlier the intervention that the parents would submit their child to, the better would be the treatment outcome in preparing the child to a normal life as he enters the portals of school. May it be in the form of therapy, group session or home intervention, the importance here is that the moment the child is diagnosed of any disability, he needs prompt intervention to maximize the possibilities of having him live a productive role in his family as well as in the society where he belongs.

Early intervention services can be in the form of physical, occupational as well as speech therapies depending on the needs of the child. This is usually given free of charge in school or in local districts where trained professionals cater services to these children with special needs.

I have a first hand experience of children with disabilities during my internship in a center for children with special needs in my school. We had promoted oral health education to the parents and caregivers since these children have compromised dexterity when it comes to their personal hygiene.

I have witnessed different children with disabilities, or the correct term is children with special needs, including ADHD, autism, Down syndrome, hydrocephalus and cerebral palsy. The children enrolled in the center are generally 10 years old and below. Therapy is given on a one-on-one sessions by students specializing in physical and occupational therapy as well as speech pathology.

Early Diagnosis Means Better Treatment Outcome

The importance of having early diagnosis of children with special needs, as stated earlier, would be helpful in the success of the treatment outcome. Some disabilities could already be diagnosed during a child's infancy. Seeking professional help is important to diagnose the child's disability since symptoms may be similar but treatment approach may be different on each disability

I interviewed the mother of Karla (not her real name for privacy purposes) who was enrolled in the center, and I asked her how long had she been bringing her child for therapy sessions. She told me that she had been bringing her daughter who had autism, to the center for two years and she had witnessed great improvements in her speech, socialization as well as her attention span.

Studies have shown that the earlier the child is submitted to therapy, the most effective
