As I am a Brit you may wonder what I am doing writing an article about US gun laws, the answer is this: Not only do I think Americans should retain the right to bear arms I think we should also have the right to bear arms here in the UK, like it or not our streets over here are no longer the safe havens they used to be, gone are the old style "English Bobby" with the funny hats, they are no more than a token for tourists nowadays and they are slowly being replaced by a new breed, not only do they look different and they are now armed because the UK is a far more dangerous place for the police nowadays, this being the case it goes to follow that it must also be a more dangerous for the average law abiding citizen on the street.(Like me).
I have not got a problem with our police being armed, I don't think I would like to do their job armed only with a piece of wood! the criminals in the UK are also a different breed now and gone are the the old "It's a fair cop guv" robbers, they are now armed killers from all over the world, gangs dealing in wholesale terrorism, drugs, prostitution, arms dealing and murder, London is now the "Little Apple", And other UK city's are catching up fast.
I live in the suburbs of Manchester. I get gangs of smacked out kids right outside my door, They smash everything up and there are loads of them. They don't see old people, they don't see children, they don't see someone in a wheelchair, they are dangerous, they see no reason and because they are smacked out of their heads and they only see shadows, I have to say there have been many times when I wished I had a gun, not to go out and threaten them but just to defend myself if they decided to break in my house.
All the above aside, What if something kicked off on an International level? What about all the terrorist cells? There is already evidence they are stockpiling explosives, It goes without saying they will also be smuggling guns in. If anything did kick off they will be armed and we won't. How are we supposed to defend ourselves if it ever did kicked off? Call the cops? You would be dead meat before they got there.
People in the USA you will understand these fears but here in the UK everyone buries their heads in the sand and pretends it will never happen because they think the police will protect them. well we all know what thought did don't we? they think the army will come to their aid if it ever did go off but What army? They are all in Iraq and Afghanistan and elsewhere defending the very people who are threatening the UK and the USA!.
I used to have a shotgun and a pistol when I was 13 years old, (in the days when you could over here), I was a great shot but I never shot anything other than beer cans and stuff, them days are long gone and there is no chance that we will ever have the right to bear arms over here.(Maybe when it's to late).
In the USA you already have the right to bear arms and if I lived in the USA I would be fighting tooth and nail to keep that right.
