The difference in your soul and you spirit is an interesting question. Many would argue that they are one in the same. They are often used as synonyms. For others the definition for the two is completely different. The reason for such controversy is pure and simple. These terms are defined by the individual based on a lifetime of experiences unique to each individual. We are all growing and changing everyday. Our daily lives bring new actions and reactions that we observe and process through our own unique perceptions. Therefore, you may think one thing in the morning and based on your experiences of the day have a different opinion at noon. For such a question as the difference in a person's soul and their spirit you are dealing with some very deep, personal, and perhaps, religious beliefs. Religious beliefs are always open to interpretation by the individual. This sparks controversy. This is what makes articles like this a "hot topic."
For me, my soul is my core. It is the nerve center of my feelings and emotions. My soul is the home of my conscience that leads me in the right direction and warns me of harm. My soul is what makes me uniquely human. My soul is what allows me free choice. My soul is what prevents me from making decisions without first considering the consequences. A being with no soul considers no one else. They are ruled by instinct alone.
My spirit is the everlasting part of me that will exist forever. A spirit is an energy source. A spirit has the ability to leave a body at will. If you tell a friend, "I'm sorry that I can't be with you, but I am with you in spirit," then you truly are. God is with us on Earth as the Holy Spirit.
My religious training tells me that my soul is the decision maker part of me that decides the ultimate fate of my spirit for eternity.
