Dining out is central to our culture. It's a social experience, a time saver, and a luxury. It doesn't, however, have to cost a fortune, nor do you have to relegate yourself to fast food and sandwiches for the rest of your life. There are a few simple tips you can follow to save yourself some money without compromising your experience.
1. Research ahead. There may be certain days or times when the meals at your favorite restaurant are discounted or when kids eat for free. Plan your dining around these specials.
2. Clip and save. You may be able to find money-off coupons. Check your newspaper, phone book, and do a quick internet search. Generally there will be special offers available for most restaurants.
3. Order wisely. Do you really need an appetizer? If you do, can you split a meal with a fellow diner? Would a drink - particularly an alcoholic drink - enhance your meal or can you just order water? Is there something on special that you would like just as much as that expensive drink or entree?
4. Consider sharing. Splitting an appetizer, dessert, or even an entree with your companion can save a lot of money.
5. Get on the list. Most chain restaraunts (and some local restaurants) have mailing lists that you can sign up for. Most of them will give you a free food coupon of some kind when you first sign up and again on your birthday, and some will send coupons throughout the year or allow you to accumulate points towards free food.
6. Mystery shop. One of the best ways to eat in restaurants for free is to mystery shop them. You will have to take some notes and fill out a survey of some kind, but you are generally reimbursed for the entire cost of your meal and then some. You can find mystery shopping jobs on volition.com .
7. Try new places. Often places which are a little more off the beaten path tend to be a bit cheaper, so avoid your typical chain restaurants in favor of the hole in the wall down the street. The food may even be better.
Following these tips will allow you to enjoy a nice dinner out for less money, without compromising anything that matters to you. Just be sure to leave an appropriate tip - on the full amount before any discounts - and to be courteous to your fellow diners.
