A simple, popular way to enjoy bedding flowers or vegetables is to plant them in pots. You'll need the following supplies and pointers to ensure success:
1. Pots or decorative containers. Use at least a 14" diameter pot for vegetables. Any size may be used for flowers. Drill 2 or 3 drainage holes in the bottom, if they don't already exist. Without proper drainage, roots may rot.
2. Potting mix. Purchase 1 or 2 bags that include slow-release fertilizer. Quantity will vary depending on the number and size of the pots. Miracle Grow makes is an excellent choice. It will release gradually through the growing season.
3. Basic tools. You will need a spade to handle potting mix and garden gloves to protect your hands from fertilizer.
4. Bedding Plants. Bedding plants come in multi-cell packs or pots. Choose healthy plants that aren't dry or stressed. For vegetables, choose varieties that were developed for container gardening. For example, a variety called a "patio tomato" is suitable.
5. Plant pots. Fill pots 2/3 full of the mix. Gently pop bedding plants from the cell pack by applying two fingers to the pot bottom and pressing upward. Loosen pot-bound roots on the bottom and sides of plant. For vegetables, center one plant in pot. For flowers, leave about 4" between plants. When mature, they will fill the container. Cover the roots up to the stem with mix, and tamp in place.
6. Maintain. Water well. Place in full sun on a patio or deck. Enjoy! Most bedding plants require full sun for maximum blooming. Check soil daily, and water as needed before dryness and stress occur.
