Elections 2008: Blatant political bias by the mainstream media

by Nathan Edwards

Created on: April 21, 2008

John McCain was criticized a few weeks ago for allegedly having an illicit affair with a female lobbyist and for granting that lobbyist favors that would normally not be granted to other lobbyists. This story was published in the New York Times, one of the most liberal newspapers in the United States. Over the course of the week, the McCain camp successfully discredited the story for not including any named sources or legitimate proof (grounds for a libel suit).

I cannot look at the New York Times anymore without questioning every single one of its stories, specifically its political and science/technology stories, because every single one of them will include some sort of liberal bias. Furthermore, the NY Times is most notable for publishing several untrue stories, which only serve to push an ultra-liberal agenda, as well as using its opinion/editorial page, which declares only 2 conservatives, 1 of which is a very liberal conservative, out of a total of 7 contributors, to further push its liberal agenda. Even one of the NY Times's editors admits that the newspaper is a liberal news agency.

I would rather read the Washington Post or the Atlanta Journal-Constitution (both of which are slightly liberal newspapers) rather than the NY Times. At the very least, both the Post and the Journal-Constitution make their stories go through a much more rigorous authentication process. Furthermore, the NY Times constantly plays hardball when it comes to a conservative person or aide. For example, it was the NY Times that exposed Valerie Plame's name and position within the CIA, starting a national scandal ending with the imprisonment of Lewis Scooter Libby. It was wrong to publish the story to begin with, as the names of covert CIA operatives are classified and should be kept classified. The NY Times should have called the CIA saying that they have some classified information, which they would like to return to the CIA. Instead, the NY Times wanted money, so they took the muckraking approach and went ahead and published the story for the world to see.

Thus, I cannot believe almost anything that the Times publishes is right or true. Also, I cannot believe that anything the Times publishes should be published. News and the media should be objective beings, present only to report the facts, not to put an opinion on the facts, but to leave the opinion-deciding process to ourselves. Unfortunately, almost no news organization does this, probably because they want to cater to the lowest common denominator when it comes to the news. In other words, they are not catering to people who think about these news stories, but instead they are catering to people easily swayed by the reading of an argument.

The New York Times does not produce news, it produces liberal arguments about various current issues.
