The first important tip when you begin to learn to swim is to believe that you can do it. This is particularly important for adults learning to swim as your nerves can increase as you get older, especially if you tried to learn to swim as a child and had a traumatic experience.
I would suggest that you go swimming with a family member who you can trust completely so that you can get used to being in the water. Check out times when your local pool has beginners classes or times when the pool is usually quite as this will be the best time for you to get started. It is probably worth investing in some lessons once you have got used to being in the water. By having proper lessons you will learn the correct techniques and how to relax in the water which makes swimming a lot easier.
You may feel really nervous about bearing it all in a swimming costume, especially if you feel unfit or overweight but remember - swimming is an excellent way to both work out and destress.
When you first attend your lessons or go with a friend, remember you should not expect to take to the water like Adrian Moor house. Learning to swim will take time and you must take it at your own pace. You should praise yourself for each achievement, no matter how small.
As you get more used to swimming, try to set a regular day to go for a swim outside of your lessons. Use this time to gradually build up your distance swimming. Don't start of by aiming to swim 20 widths on the first week as you will be disappointed if you don't achieve this.
Any parents out there - I suggest taking your very small babies and children to the swimming pool - the sooner they get used to it the quicker they will start to feel confident and relax in the water. Also make bathing at home fun by lightly splashing about.
Most importantly, stay confident and enjoy the new skill you are learning.relieve it or not, a lot of people don't know how to swim. The reasons for not learning how to swim vary. Some people just don't like being near water. Others never had an instructor to teach them. However, just because you don't know how to swim you shouldn't learn.
Learning how to swim in today's day and age is much more structured than ever before. From private lessons at the local rec center to group lessons through an organization like The American Red Cross, would-be-swimmers have more options today than ever.
